    We bring Stone Age to life giving children the opportunity handle replicas and original objects from our collections to recreate a true Stone Age Experience.

    Pyramids and pharaohs are closer than you think, come and explore Ancient Egypt and unlock the stories of a 5000 year old civilisation. Your pupils will get hands on experience on life and death in Ancient Egypt and will have a go at making their own mummies!

    Get hands on with real Ancient Greek objects in this fun interactive workshop. Your pupils will learn about life in Ancient Greece and the canny Greek Gods and their mythology.

    What did the Romans ever do for us? Explore what Hasting was like 2000 years ago and the impact Romans had on Britain through a series of fun and interactive activities.

    Victorians and their great explorations are brought back to life. Children will explore the magnitude of the Great Exhibition and will become explorers themselves, they will discover fearless female Victorian Explores and will set to create their own cabinet of curiosities.

    The notorious rock cycle and different types of rock are made easy and fun at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery as children will be handling our unique geology collection, will conduct experiments to find out about rocks properties and will play games, will complete challenges and tasks to comprehend their learning.

    Children will find out about traditional Inuit life, how they used natural resources to survive in a cold environment and they will understand more about the animals of the Arctic. Children will explore different materials and will encounter a polar bear!

    Discover why every animal on the planet has a skeleton. Learn why animals need skeletons to be strong and healthy. Explore the 3 types of skeletons, investigate and handle real museum specimens to see how animal skeletons have adapted differently due to their behaviours and habitats.

    Length of Session: 1 hour

    Delivery: On site

    Your class will explore a vast array of animals and their unique habitats. Students will meet with boas, monkeys, platypuses, polar bears and more while investigating over 30 animals up close to determine their characteristics that help them survive at their habitats while finding out what’s the difference between a vertebrae and an invertebrate animal.

    Length of Session: 45 minutes

    Delivery: On site

    Your class will look at evidence of change over time, they will get hands on to work out why these changes occur and they will discover how Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection works by looking at real life examples.

    Key Stages: 1 and 2

    This workshop uses a range of real and replica objects linked to the experience of people at Hastings and the wider British Empire during World War Two. This workshop covers a wide range of topics from rationing to where the Sussex Regiment were deployed. It does contain references to the Holocaust, which may be upsetting to some children.

    Delivery: On site

    Students will unlock the fascinating world of museums and they will find out how they can pursue a career in the sector.

LEGO education innovation workshops

Also check our our range of LEGO education workshops. They use LEGO bricks, programming tools, and museum workshops to ignite students’ curiosity, support creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking-skills in a fun and exciting way.

Cost

Workshops are free for schools within the Hastings Borough Council Area. Prices start are £2.00 per child for non-borough, language and independent schools which needs to reach a minimum (please get in touch for amounts). Our fees and charges are reviewed on annual basis by Hastings Borough Council.

Safeguarding

Our schools and groups visit risk assessment (PDF 300mb) is reviewed annually and updated as required. We follow Hastings Borough Council’s safeguarding policies and procedures. All museum staff have undergone Disclosure and Baring Service check.

      Cancellations

      On occasion bookings may need to be cancelled. We ask that you give us as much notice as possible if this happens. We will always try to reschedule your workshop in the first instance. If we are not able to then we will not charge you for the workshop and give you a refund if applicable. If we have to book your workshop, we will contact you by email or phone as far in advance as possible.

      Evaluation

      We would appreciate evaluation forms being completed for workshop so we can improve and refine the offer.
