Dr Colin Taylor

Dr Colin Taylor was an eminent authority on Native American history.  He lived and worked in Hastings, and for over twenty five years provided invaluable support to Hastings Museum and Art Gallery in developing its Native American holdings, including in 1982 the donation of the Plains Indian collection of Edward Blackmore.

Taylor was an admirer of the conservationist Grey Owl.  He was a consultant for Richard Attenborough's film Grey Owl and was an inspiring founder and secretary of the Grey Owl Society.

Detailed View

He started collecting as a schoolboy and an early acquisition was a magnificent headdress worn by Iron Tail who toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.
This piece is one of the highlights of the exhibition.

In addition to collecting, Taylor was a researcher and writer.  He lectured widely in the United States and Europe.  Just before he died in 2004, over 120 items from the Taylor collection were transferred to Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.  The Taylor Collection includes exquisite models of arctic figures, domestic tools, goggles and snowshoes and an array of beautiful beaded and embroidered bags, hats and other items of clothing.
