Hastings Museum and Art Gallery invited four local schools, spanning Foundation Stage to Key stage 3, to collaborate on a local history project that explored how existing curriculum topics could be enhanced through access to HMAG archives and local history collections.
The project planning and delivery was enhanced by regular joint meetings with all participating schools, which provided a great platform for sharing ideas and offering support.
This project was made possible with funding by the Magdalen and Lasher Charitable Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
There were 3 distinct elements to the project:
'Our School' encouraged partner schools to explore a broad range of individual research interests, with historic material available for use in school, with support for both staff and pupils from HMAG staff and freelancers practitioners. Potential source material includes maps, photos, plans, street directories, and related objects, and the aim is that these should enhance existing topics, rather than become an additional project within school.
The work resulting from Our School will be exhibited at the Old Town Hall Museum from 8 July to 13 August 2006. The exhibition documents the process and methodology of the project, with a display of some of the work created. School partners were invited to work on the design of the display with HMAG staff.
'Our School' Online:
These 'Our School' pages have been developed to document and display a greater range of pupils' work, as well as providing extensive archive images from the HMAG collections that are available for further and independent research. Pupils had the opportunity to discuss issues around web design and accessibility with the web designer, thereby considering different ways of accessing information, and how it can be formatted for maximum impact and visual appeal.
The project has been evaluated with children, teachers and freelancers, using the Inspiring Learning for All generic learning outcomes of Creativity and Progression.
