This 19th century chess piece has been carved into the shape of a rat, dressed in Japanese costume. It is made from horn and was collected along with other Japanese objects by Lord and Lady Brassey in 1877.
The Japanese collection at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery is modest in size but includes a suit of armour, edged weapons (including katana, wakizashi and naginata), saddles and stirrups as well as sword fittings, a collection of prints, some ceramics (including tea ware), lacquerware (including inro) and netsuke.
The Japanese collection is on permanent display in the Upper Durbar Hall.
