The Magic Lantern in Hastings

Before cinemas, television or computers, people watched pictures projected onto screens by the magic lantern. With descriptions from the Hastings and St Leonards Observer, this exhibition looks at shows that were given around the Hastings area during a typical magic lantern 'season' in 1880 -1881: from Christmas Party treats to lectures on ancient Egyptian pyramids. This display includes Victorian photographic and hand-painted lantern slides.
