View of North Lodge, Winterbourne and Gloucester Lodge from the Subscription Gardens, St. Leonards on Sea. Watercolour by Rose Wood c.1845
Throughout the nineteenth century the Burton family kept an assiduous record of all their activities and in 1903 a large number of plans and architectural drawings were given to the Museum following the death of Decimus’ niece, Helen Wood. In the 1950s and 60s this was augmented by material from descendants of James Burton’s youngest daughter, Jessie including three scrap albums. One of these contained late 19th century press cuttings relating to the Wellington Arch.

In 1997 fifteen further albums put together by the women of the Burton family were acquired by the Hastings Museum with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund. In addition to portrait sketches, silhouettes, engravings, landscapes and early photographs the collection also included watercolour drawings by Decimus Burton, illustrated elsewhere in these web pages.
